White City Amusement Park, Cleveland, Ohio

White City Amusement Park was built on the lake at Lake Shore Blvd. and E. 140th St. It competed with, and imitated, Euclid Beach, a mile to the east. Served by the same streetcars, the 2 parks became a common destination for a day's outing. Unlike Euclid Beach, White City charged an admission fee. Attractions included the Shoot-the-Chutes water ride, the Scenic Railway roller coaster, the Flying Airships, Bostock's Animal Show, and the inevitable dance hall. However, catastrophe besieged the park. In May 1906, fire destroyed the grounds. The park was rebuilt, but a gale on 24 July 1907 destroyed it again, and White City did not reopen. The grounds are now (1986) the site of the Easterly Sewage Disposal Plant.
