Mr. Adler is also the composer of Concerto in G for Piano and Orchestra: A Walk Through an English Garden, which premiered in New York City in 1993, and 3 Piano Transitions, which he performed in 1994 in the Rotunda of Steinway Hall. A trio of his choral works were praised by Conan Castle in the Choral Journal as demonstrating "Adler's skillful and imaginative musical craft": Carols of Splendour, "a cheerful, splashy tour de force, skillfully constructed and full of clever ideas," the "rewarding" A Winter Triptych, and El Noi de La Mare (Catalan carol), "a gentle piece of great beauty."
Other works of James Adler include On the Rebound, premiered in 1989 by the Gregg Smith Singers; It's Gotta Be America, commissioned and performed for the Centennial Celebration of the Statue of Liberty; and Canticle For Peace, written and performed for the opening of the 43rd session of the United Nations General Assembly. He is the composer of the children's "pOpera" Herbie and Carnie: A Dinosaga; the Classic Rag-time Suite, numerous solo, chamber, and other choral works, and the award-winning film score for The Hat Act.
Mr. Adler is also a busy performer and conductor, earning acclaim for his performance of Rhapsody in Blue at the Paramount Theatre in 1994. Mr. Adler appeared as guest conductor of three of his works with the Asheville (NC) Choral Society; he also conducted the critically acclaimed premiere of his Suite Moderne for Strings with the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia in 1987. The premiere of his Two Dances in One was performed by Mr. Adler in 1987 on a live broadcast over the WFMT-FM Broadcast Network.
Mr. Adler made his performing debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and has appeared on the Orchestra's Allied Arts Piano Series in recital. Other performance highlights include appearances on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts Series at the Chicago Cultural Center; being guest soloist before an audience of 50,000 at Chicago's Grant Park Concerts; guest soloist performances at Alice Tully Hall; and a special London orchestral performance in 1983 at the Royal Albert Hall, which was broadcast by the BBC.
A native of Chicago, James Adler is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Mr. Adler is a member of the Fine Arts faculty at Saint Peter's College, where he has also served as choral director. He has adjudicated at national and international music competitions and is himself the recipient of an award from ASCAP for outstanding composition achievement each year since 1978. He has received grants from Meet The Composer and from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and he is a laureate in Who's Who in American Music and the International Who's Who in Music. His multi-faceted career has led Newhouse Newspapers to proclaim that "the name of James Adler is a triple threat, as his recognition as composer, conductor, and performer grows steadily."
