AIDS REQUIEM
Last weekend also marked the premiere of a gripping new work at Emory's
Glenn Memorial Auditorium. James Adler's 75-minute "Memento Mori,"
a requiem that draws from both traditional and contemporary texts, makes
a poignant, unsettling, compassionate statement about AIDS and its impact
on all our lives.
Employing an eclectic, predominantly lyrical musical language, Adler writes for both chorus and orchestra with uncommon imagination. The Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus, which commissioned the work, realized it with polish and power under director David Puckett. Nannette Soles was the eloquent mezzo-soprano.
